Choreographer's Note: "HAUS" was presented in Scripps College's annual dance concert, "Scripps Dance". "In the Works" is a concert dedicated to the work of student and guest choreographers.
"HAUS" highlights and centers queer, ballroom subculture. Founded in the late 1960s by Crystal LaBeija, ballroom gives queer individuals the space to be free. Balls are thrown in an effort to celebrate skill, performance, identity, and body. Some iconic categories are: Grand March, Face, Vogue Performance, Catwalk, and Executive Realness. "Haus" was particularly centered around the concept of ballroom houses. Houses like LaBeija, Ninja, Miyake-Mugler, Balenciaga, and more provide queer folks with a found family structure, which most of us don't get from our birth families.
